Duck shooting

We woke to intermittent volleys of shots yesterday and the shooters on our ponds reported an opening morning tally of 107 ducks. They were back again last night, much to the discomfort of Pepper – the working dogs are unperturbed by  gun fire, but in spite of his Labrador genes the playing dog hates loud noises and spent the day very close to the house.

There were no human casualties yesterday, although one shooter courted hypothermia when he stripped off and swam across the pond to win a bet which gave him free beer for the night. The silence this morning suggests he wasn’t the only one to have a big night, or perhaps it’s just the first hard frost of winter that’s kept the shooters in bed.
