The Labour caucus is meeting this morning.
In the normal course of events the party would be hoping for media attention to focus on its policy or attacks on the government.
Instead of which attention will be on the leadership vote, required by last year’s change of rules.
It’s almost certain David Shearer will get the 60% of the vote plus one required to retain the leadership.
David Cunliffe has said he’s supporting Shearer and there’s no sign of anyone else wanting to issue a challenge, at least for the time being.
But will this be a Pyrrhic victory?
Winning because no-one else is willing, or has the support, to challenge is not the same as winning because he has the total confidence of his caucus.
Today’s vote will be a win for now but not necessarily a win for long.

I’m not even going to bother voting anymore – waste of time and whoever gets in will continue to lead this Nation into its sorry decline in this age of malais.
100 years from now Parliamentary debates will probably be in Cantonese anyway
Voting is important but change requires more active engagement. You need to find the party which best suits your philosophy, join it and work with it to get the policies you want.
I don’t want “policies”. I want the recognition that Government is a necessary evil and that it should be kept as small as possible and out of peoples lives as much as possible.
“Policies” are things that should be kept to a bare minimum
Too many people are afraid to come out of the political closet. I would say join the party that feels right. You can only find this out by getting closer. Policies are just a means of delivering principles. As in any organisation, too many or too complex policies might suggest something wrong with the philosophy…
