  1. Alwyn says:

What was unusual about the equestrian events at the 1956 Olympic games?

  2. Andrei says:

Aha Alwyn, I know this one partly anyway.

In 1956 the games were held in Melbourne but Australian quaratine laws prevented the importation of horses for the equestrian events so they were held later, somewhere in the Northern Hemisphere. My memory says Helsinki, the site of the 1952 games which would make sense but on that I’m not so sure

  3. Andrei says:

Mine is a mystery object question

This was made in Tula which is famous for the manufacture of these.

What is it and what is it used for?

Click here for the mystery object

  4. Alwyn says:

In total gold medals at the Olympics Michael Phelps is way ahead with 18. He was a swimmer.
Can anyone tell me the top three gold medal winners in Athletics?

  5. I don’t know about Tula, but that’s a samovar.

  6. Andrei says:

ездить в Тулу со своим самоваром yezdit’ v Tulu so svoím samovarom

To come to Tula with your own Samovar i.e. to carry coals to Newcastle.

The Christmas Cake will have to wait but there’s time enough yet, it is only the Feast Day of St Nick.

  7. On the basis that asking people doesn’t count as cheating, my neighbour says that it is the “Flying Finn” Pavo Nurmi and USA’s Carl Lewis, but doesn’t know who number three is.

  8. Andrei says:

If I were to name the greatest Olympian in Athletics then the Czech Emil Zatopek would be my pick – he comes from a different era though
