Keeping you on my greeting card file.

  1. Alwyn says:

    1. James Herriott if I am remembering correctly.
    2. No idea, and reading it I’m not sure I want to.
    3. The French, as a noun, means a believer. As an Adjective faithful
I don’t know the other languages
    4. Sounds like the Boy Scouts, although as I remember it the oath went something like
“I promise to do my best, to do my duty to God and the Queen, to help other people at all times and to obey the scouts law”
    5. Yes

  2. Rob Hosking says:

    1. Don’t know but I bet it was a cat. Sounds like the sort of thing they’d say.

    2. ‘…and call me Loyal’. Dave Dobbyn. Not a huge Dobbyn fan, but almost exactly 10 years ago some friends of mine played this at the end of their wedding party. Sometime after 1am, very awash with sentiment and bubbly.

    3. I’m guessing loyalty.

    4. Scouts. Though I suspect the Guides have something similar.

    5. Too right it does.

  3. 1. I had no idea. James Herriot sounds right, but it wasn’t my guess- reading the text I thought that the author might be saying that animals are better off because they don’t have souls, and therefore don’t feel love etc. So I’m guessing Janet Frame.
    2. and call me Loyal.
I have not been able to work out that song’s meaning.
    3. Loyalty, fidelity.
    4. Boy Scouts.
    5. True loyalty requires real love; but if you are loyal, you develop love.
